Foam injection behind Gulf Shores walls:
a void filler, not a cure for leaks or lean

By Gulf Shores SeawallUpdated

Seawall foam injection fills empty space behind or under a wall in Gulf Shores. It works on a sound wall and does not fix leaks, leans or failed anchors.

What does seawall foam injection do?

Foam injection fills empty space behind or under a wall. A crew drills small holes and pumps in expanding foam. It does not replace a failed anchor, patch a hole in the wall or stop water from entering.

Short answer. Foam fixes a void. It does not fix the reason the void formed. If soil keeps washing out, the void comes back.

When is foam injection the right fix?

Foam makes sense when the wall itself is sound and the problem is empty space. The wall must still stand straight, hold its anchors and keep its face closed.

When foam fits and when it does not
SituationFoam fitWhy
Void under a patio slab or walkway
Often a fit
The slab is sound; it lost its base
Small void behind a sound cap
May fit
Only if the leak is already sealed
Wall leaning toward the water
Not a fit
Anchors failed; foam adds no pull-back
Holes or gaps in the wall face
Not first
Seal the face or foam will leak out
Large washout, active sinkhole
Not first
Find the water path before filling
Wall at end of its life
Not a fit
Replacement is the honest answer

No public record gives a service life for foam on seawalls. Test any long guarantee.

Signs there may be a void

  • A hollow sound when you tap a slab or the ground near the wall.
  • A low spot in the lawn that returns after you fill it.
  • A slab or paver that rocks or has opened a gap at the edge.
  • Fine sand on the water side of the wall at low tide.

Voids point to a leak path. Trace it first with the leak-tracing steps.

Why voids form in salt and brackish water here

Water moves soil. Tides, rain and wave action push water through gaps and carry sand out. Voids form where it leaves.

  • Heavy rain. Hurricane Sally dropped nearly 30 inches at Orange Beach and about 29 inches near Fort Morgan. Sally rainfall
  • Reverse flow. Water trapped behind a wall can rush back out when levels fall.
  • Open joints and rust holes. Salt eats steel and cracks concrete, and fines escape through the gaps.
  • Poor drains. A downspout that dumps at the wall edge cuts a channel.

A professional should name the cause before anything is pumped in.

How a foam job goes

A typical job has four steps. Ask the contractor to describe each one.

  1. Find the void. Tapping, probing or a ground-penetrating scan can map the space.
  2. Seal the leak path. Patch holes, joints and drains first.
  3. Inject. Drill small holes and pump foam in stages while watching the surface.
  4. Check. Re-measure level and probe again after the foam cures.

The foam should stay out of the water. Ask how the crew controls leaks and what they do if foam reaches the shore.

What foam cannot do

  • It cannot pull a leaning wall back.
  • It cannot replace tiebacks, anchors or a failed footing.
  • It cannot close a hole in the face from the inside.
  • It cannot stop wave scour at the toe of a wall.

If a contractor says foam will fix a lean, ask an engineer to confirm. Compare tiebacks and anchors.

Does foam injection need a permit?

Maybe. Foam work sits in a gray area, so ask the permit office. The bulkhead permit guide covers the full chain.

Questions to ask a foam contractor

  • How do you know the size of the void?
  • What stops the leak that caused it?
  • What foam do you use, and is it rated for salt water?
  • How do you keep foam out of the water?
  • How will we check level before and after?
  • What is in writing if the void returns?

Where do owners ask about voids and washouts?

Voids and washouts come up near canals, lagoon edges and the Intracoastal.

Foam injection questions answered

Can foam stop a sinkhole behind my bulkhead?

It can fill the hole. It cannot stop the water that made it. Seal the leak path first, or the soil will wash out again.

Is foam safe near the water?

Request the product data sheet, and find out how the crew keeps foam out of the water. The permit office can say whether the job needs a permit.

Can foam fix a leaning wall?

No. A lean means lost support, usually from failed anchors. See tiebacks and anchors.

Is foam a permanent fix?

Not on its own. It is a void filler. How long it lasts depends on whether the cause of the void was fixed.
